Copywriting: More than a business…it’s a LIFESTYLE

As promised, today marks the kick off of the first new Podcast in many moons. I’m excited to be back with you!

Today I’d like to invite you to start thinking about your copywriting career in a whole new light. Not just as a business, or a way for you to make money. It’s really so much more than that. You see, when you get rolling with a successful copywriting career, it should become a LIFESTYLE for you. And it’s sure as heck isn’t about sitting on a beach, sipping a drink with an umbrella in it while you occasionally lift a finger to type a sentence or two on your laptop (though you CAN do that from time to time too if you choose!)

I’m talking about a lifestyle that puts your values and priorities front and center at all times.

A lifestyle that along with the fun, beautiful, and exciting times, allows you to fully focus on the inevitable valleys in life too, such as illness, family emergencies, and unexpected bumps in the road.

It’s widely acknowledged that most folks with a traditional j-o-b are only a paycheck or two from complete financial meltdown. If life throws you a curveball, you’re apt to be out of the game faster than you ever thought possible. I can remember those days very well, the days when you are constantly adding the numbers in your checkbook, trying like heck to stretch your two or three digit bank balance to the end of the month. It’s no fun, and in fact, it can be downright frightening.

Instead, consider the peace of mind you can have, when you know you have a skill so valuable, you can literally crank up the financial thermostat as needed. You can work as hard as you want, and see the profitable rewards piling up in the bank. You can scale back for a while, with the full assurance and security of knowing there is plenty of money to last you for a very long time, and whenever you want to, you can add more to the pot. It is SO worth it to put the effort into transforming your life this way. This past month brought that home to me even more powerfully than before.

Now, it’s time to show you another wonderful benefit of a muscular copywriting career!

Perhaps you think it’s out of place to spend some time showing you pictures of my new “world headquarters” in Arizona. But you see, in this blog I want you to have a chance to get to know me. That means giving you windows to look through to see how I do things, and why. And more than that, it’s meant as an encouragement that you really CAN get there from here! Only a little more than 2-1/2 years ago, I was as in the dark about copywriting as many of you may be right now. I can remember wondering if I’d ever understand the rhythm and flow of an effective sales letter. And now? Well, take a look at…

The 6-Figure Remodel

It all began when we were driving around indulging one of our passions–looking at real estate. And low and behold, we came upon a house sitting on half-an-acre, with a mountain view, and a TON of privacy. Plus, it had a separate 500 square foot office, AND a double garage, AND a separate shop, AND some wonderful possibilities for separate courtyard areas, AND it had enough room for guests, AND it had a fricking huge swimming pool AND it had plenty of room for the mobile office, AND…our accountant told us we needed a big fat tax deduction this year after her eyes bugged out of her head over how much my income had increased.

Only problem was this place was totally devoid of any personality in the decor. Bland, boring vanilla everywhere, horrible pink and white linoleum and pink and white bathroom tile (Hello 1960’s? Your TILE is missing and it’s at our house!) Plus, there weren’t enough patios, we didn’t like the grey cement porches, hated the window coverings, appliances, and gawd-awful flourescent lights and SIX ceiling fans in the living room and kitchen. It looked like an invasion from “Apocalypse Now” with the full onslaught of helicopters landing.

So, being the actionable kind of folks that we are, we bought the place at the end of December, and began tearing the beejeebers out of it in January.

Here’s a few pics of the demolition derby. Here’s one of the bathrooms. Should give you the general idea..

Demolition Derby

More torn up stuff!

Here’s the kitchen AFTER we’d torn out everything, including the kitchen sink!

Empty Kitchen

The new tile floor was in process, some of the new color was already on the walls (SIXTY gallons of paint to do the color scheme we wanted!), and the new fridge was sitting in place. Those ugly pantry doors are long gone, replaced by new custom built pantry with an Adventium oven. You can see the new dishwasher with towel over it in the doorway. The new Trivection oven and the SINK were in the living room! :0) We were waiting for the new cabinet install. Believe it or not, TOMORROW is the day we finally get our solid surface countertops installed. They had to be built in Tucson and trucked in.

Here’s a celebration moment when we finally had most of the remodel done. Note there is no longer one SPECK of vanilla left in this place!

Nice surprise, yes?

Celebration!

We’ve got big plans for “world headquarters”, which we now have dubbed Casa de Milagro (House of Miracles). We intend to host some very unique, intense, and inspiring small events here. If you come to visit, you’ll be welcome!

Welcome!

Casa de Milagro

We’ve added a “baby” vehicle to the mix, with a Jeep Rubicon to go exploring in the desert. See the 6-figure truck? It’s working hard loaded with a full pallet of landscape brick for one of the new courtyards we’ve built.

All in all… It’s a Dog’s Life!

OK, that’s been fun! Hope you had fun too. But in all seriousness, please keep in mind what putting the effort into your coypwriting can mean to you. The possibilities are literally limitless. Take a few minutes to watch today’s podcast. And then start thinking about what it is you need to get where you’d like to go with your copywriting business.

Then please post your comments here. I’d really love to hear from you about what your stumbling blocks are with copywriting. What’s holding you back?

You’re not alone out there, even though it can feel like it sometimes. I’m right here. And I want to help you achieve the lifestyle you deserve.

Until next time.

Tina
I’m glad to hear that you and Ron and Rusty are all doing better now. My condolences to you all.

These pictures are really inspiring. I was just talking about the fact that copywriting and being an online marketer is not a job or a business but a life style, so when we watched your podcast we had a chuckle.

Look forward to hearing and seeing more of you! :)

Hey Tina,

What a beautiful place you have. I am filled with awe that you accomplished so much in so little time. It’s only been about 5 weeks since the System Seminar but it seems like an eternity ago. It was really good to see you, Ron, and Rusty there. I certainly appreciate the inspiration you’ve provided to me along the way.

I’ve been so busy since then, I haven’t had time to sleep let alone relax. And I just got the mp3s from all the sessions so my ipod will be burning up the battery this week.

Your podcast was so nicely done. I guess I better figure out how to do that too, if I want any hope of keeping up the Lorenzes. :) I’m looking forward to hearing more soon.

What’s my biggest problem regarding building my copywriting business? Well, I’m not sure it’s the biggest one but I constantly struggle with how much to study each day vs. how much to write each day vs. how much to market each day. So if you could elaborate on how you balance the various aspects of running your business, I think that would be really valuable to so many of us out here in the trenches building and maintaining our own copywriting businesses.

Hi Tina:
I am very interested in getting my copy writing career going. I submitted a re-write of my favorite restaurant and I have not heard anything about my critique for the past three weeks.
I am hoping to use the critique from my re-write of my favorite restaurant to make sure that my FIRST SALES LETTER is free from any errors made in my favorite restaurant re-write.
The critique from my rewrite is taking too long to come back, in my estimation. My issue is can I submit my FIRST SALES LETTER before seeing the critique of the re-write?
Thanks,
Samuel.

Janet Beatrice @ 6:09 am:

Hi Tina,

As you know, my biggest stumbling block regarding long form salesletters is learning the flow - you’re the one who told me that! So I should be studying sales letters, right? I guess I’m so intimidated that I haven’t been doing it. Although I did use that technique on my new website, www.marketwithspirit.com.

I’m going to start reading the letters from the AWAI course. Meanwhile, I’m so looking forward to your podcasts on copywriting techniques!

It’s nice to see your podcasts again.

Janet

Leslie Morgan @ 8:26 am:

Tina,

I found your website on accident really. I was searching for a course to teach me copywriting. I’d been receiving information from Newsmax about what a great career this can be. I ended up ordering a series of study materials from AIWA, Michael Masterson — (I hope that was a good choice). I am so afraid of wasting my time on something that is pie in the sky. Right now I own a retail business that the lease is running out on by Jan. 08. I have alot of energy and always did well on writing assignments in school… My biggest worry is that I would waste months working toward something that was just designed to make the online source money and not me.

By the way, I live in Tucson AZ. Your new home looks like the desert around here. Looks like a beautiful place!

If you have time to respond to my concerns I’d appreciate it!

Thanks,

Leslie

Pam @ 10:09 am:

Hi Tina,

The new “world headquarters” is gorgeous. What a
transformation! Your own desert oasis that suits
you and Ron, and your lifestyle, to a tee.

As for my stumbling block, I want to offer more
value to my clients with an arsenal of
marketing strategies/advice I can pull from
in addition to copywriting. I do provide guidance
in that area but sometimes a new type of product
comes a long that requires a different approach.

There is a lot more I would like to learn, especially
with direct response mailings. I try to follow the
marketing gurus but there are so many to choose from
these days! :) You’re a great marketer as well as
copywriter so I’m placing all bets on you…

Thanks!

Pam

Mike Sieber @ 11:07 am:

What a beautiful place. Do you happen to need a poolboy? :)

Mark Henderson @ 5:13 pm:

Hey Tina

Excellent pictures of an awesome lifestyle - and your podcast commentary was, as usual, a breath of fresh air!

You hit the nail on the head…LIFESTYLE RULES…and we need to be taking ANY steps necessary to arrive where you are now.

P.S. Let me know when you’re ready for a jet because I know a really sharp pilot..

Rock ON,

Mark

Trease Carpenter @ 9:33 pm:

Tina,
I finally figured out how to view your podcasts. That’s why I hadn’t posted before today here. This is totally awesome and I love your place. I’d love to see more photos of your place and the remodel job. That’s some high quality ceramic tile you’ve got. Real estate copy along with travel advertorials and article writing are my main copywriting interests. Real estate interests me anyway.

I need to learn about writing travel advertorials and for the real estate industry. Headlines are hard for me. How do you come up with a good one. I know what AWAI teaches about them, but I need more details. I need to know how to break it down and do in depth analysis so I understand the workings of a good headline.

Also I need work on providing smoother flow and transitioning and to understand bullets better.

One big thing with me is, how do you come up with a good flexible schedule that works? What does a typical week in the writing life of Tina look like? How is your office set up? I’m looking for hints there too.

Scheduling and no procrastinating are my biggie areas I need to work on. Any help I can get is appreciated.

You’re a really good photographer too. And I like the beginning when your podcast first comes on. That is so dynamic. And the music is really upbeat and energetic. I really like the guitar part.
